Chapter Fourteen

Ointment

“I know you did not want a traditional baby shower,” Teagan said.

“And that, my sister, is the most correct observation.”

I did not want all the attention a baby shower warranted, and I certainly didn’t want to play games where people measured my belly and tasted baby food to see what flavor it was. So Megan and Teagan obliged my request and planned something so much better.

The ladies hosted a fancy tea party for me at The Eastwood estate where Brooke and Tricky were now living. We all got dressed up and wore big hats and pretty dresses; the gentleman wore khakis and button-up shirts, and they invited pretty much the whole world.

It really was a good thing that they had the party at the Eastwood estate because there were people everywhere. The lovely spring day was great weather for croquet, corn hole, horseshoes, and badminton. Some people brought gifts and others did not, and I was totally fine with that either way. I hated feeling like it was an obligation to purchase something to bring to a party.

The gifts, especially the large ones, were a reminder that we needed to figure out what we were going to do with the baby's room. I didn’t have plans to paint the room pink or blue but rather keep things simple. We had put off finding out if it was a boy or a girl anyway. I convinced Nik that the surprise might just be worth the wait.

Several of our friends from D.C. made the trip to Elkton, which told us quite a bit about their feelings for me and Nik. Gus and Lydia were there, in addition to several of the ladies that Nik worked with. They were also on Gus’s bowling team, so we saw them quite a bit. I think they were just excited that Gage was giving free tours of the Frost ice cream factory to anyone who wanted one. Most of the locals had already seen the factory, so it was a treat for some of our other friends.

Megan had filled the buffet with cold salad sandwiches, including a pimento cheese spread that she had made herself. I made sure to grab a sandwich before they were all gone and enjoyed every bite. It was likely the best I had tried so far but just didn’t satisfy my craving. I wasn’t sure it would ever be satisfied!

Gage also had prepared special ice cream flavors for the baby shower, just as he had done for Brookie when she was pregnant. Since we hadn't learned yet if it was a boy or a girl, he went with neutral-colored flavors as if he was choosing paint colors for the baby’s room. He made a white chocolate mint chocolate chip, which was heavenly; he also knew traditional mint chocolate chip was my favorite and used that knowledge appropriately. He had also fashioned a new blend using the flavors from Merida’s potion that I enjoyed so well and called it Honey’s Delight, using honey, peach, and mint ice cream as the bases.
